Harbour Community Association

The Harbour Community Association (HCA), established in March 2010, is a voluntary organisation which aims to bring together all those parties, including residents, local authorities, voluntary and other organisations, concerned with furthering the social interests of the harbour community.

In March 2012, an important milestone on the road to a sustainable harbour community was reached when the HCA’s application for charitable status was accepted by the Charity Commission.  This provided a structure that will open up access to many more funding streams, from Government and other charitable organisations.

It will also enable the bringing together of groups of like-minded individuals, and to promote a much wider variety of activities, once the hoped for harbour community centre becomes a reality.

Aims and Objectives

The main objective of the Harbour Community Association is to identify the social requirements of the Sovereign Harbour community, and to enable the provision of venues in which these activities could take place.

The aim, to find and secure premises for the social life of the community.

Membership

To prove the need for continued funding and for a community centre the HCA will have to provide the proof that there is a need and desire from residents.

All harbour residents over the age of 18 are entitled to free membership and can register as a member. The more people who register, the louder the voice.

To register for HCA membership, pick up a form from the Haven School on a Thursday evening. Alternatively you can download a membership form by clicking here... or email hca@shra.co.uk

The choice is yours, use it or lose it.

HCA Residents Survey

The HCA carried out a survey of residents' leisure interests and needs in 2010 and is now trying to identify likely venues and establish availability to begin to organise as many of the identified activities as possible. They will, of course, not be able to put everything on all at once, but will certainly endeavour to do as much as they can. HCA Report Back following survey of residents' interests...

Devolved Ward Budget Income

The HCA were awarded £4000 by the Sovereign Ward Councillors from the Devolved Ward Budget for 2010/11. These funds are to be used for the benefit of the Sovereign Ward community, and the HCA have, with the use of the award of £2500 from the previous year's budget, secured the use of the The Haven School, Atlantic Drive on Friday evenings beginning in January 2011.

Planned Activities

It is planned that the funding available will be allocated as follows:

Indoor Bowls - £2,155; Keep Fit - £490; Dance Equip - £250; Games Equip - £300; Table Tennis Equip - £430; Arts and Crafts Equip - £375. Total = £4,000.

Because the only current viable location for activities is the Haven School, and the difficulties in storing equipment, the amount that can be done is severely restricted. It is hoped that progress will be made in the last quarter of 2011

Carpet Bowls

The Carpet Bowls group meets every Thursday evening in term time, at the Haven School, from 6:45pm until 9:15pm.
