Haven Players

Probably the nearest Amateur Drama group to Sovereign Harbour, The Haven Players at Stone Cross put on a full programme of first-rate - and cheap - entertainment throughout the year.

Productions include two plays, a panto, a musical show and a Christmas show. The cast of our next production, detailed below, includes two Harbour residents, so why not come along and support us and have an enjoyable evening. You might even get the 'bug' - we are always on the lookout for new members, both on and back stage.

The Haven Players Update

The Haven Players is a small amateur dramatic group who perform at the Memorial Hall in Stone Cross. Each year we put on a pantomime, spring play, summer musical evening, autumn play, and Christmas evening. New members are welcome whether you are a thespian, have a talent for making scenery or wielding a paintbrush, are wonderful at cooking or tea-making, handy with a needle and thread, or fancy trying your hand at directing.

Rookery Nook A farce by Ben Travers
By Natalie Beams (Director)

With the holiday season nearly over there is just enough time to visit the 1920's Somerset seaside resort of Chumpton-by-the-Sea where Gerald Popkiss is visiting his new wife Clara's Sister Gertrude and her husband Harold. Visiting with Gerald is his cousin Clive. Both Gerald and Clive have a reputation for getting into "trouble of the female sort", however after being married for six weeks, Gerald has left all of that behind him.

As soon as Gerald arrives, a pretty young lady called Rhoda Marley arrives in her pyjamas claiming to have been run out of her home by her over-bearing Stepfather Putz. According to a local rumour, spread by Gertrude, Putz is not her Stepfather but they are really "living in sin". Gerald, on hearing Gertrude has spread an untruth about this girl who "radiates purity and innocence" swears to help her in any way he can.

Putz arrives with his dog to take Rhoda home with him, however after much arguing he returns home disappointed and Gerald and Rhoda agree to resolve the matter in the morning. Before they can turn in for the night, Gertrude, Harold and Clive arrive and Rhoda is forced to hide in the kitchen. She re-appears at the wrong moment and Clive and Harold see her. Gerald has to make them swear not to tell Gertrude and he promises he will explain everything in the morning.

Will Gertrude find out about Rhoda and Gerald? What is the truth about Rhoda and Putz? Will Putz get Rhoda back? What else will happen to complicate proceedings? To find out join the Haven Players to watch "Rookery Nook" at Stone Cross Memorial Hall on 25th, 26th, and 27th September at 7.30pm. Tickets £7 for Adults, £3 for Students. Box Office 01323 460174

The Swingin' Sixties
The Haven Players Summer Musical Evening

In July 2008 The Haven Players will took their audiences on a trip back to the 1960s. The 60s was an exciting decade full of contrasts and achievements. No-one who was around at the time could forget the impact of the Vietnam War and the Summer of Love. There were some firsts, for example, Concord taking to the skies and man landing on the moon, and some lasts, such as trolley buses running for the last time in London, and in January 1969 on the rooftop of the Apple building, the Beatles last 'live' public performance. This was also the decade when the death penalty was abolished and smoking advertisements were banned on television.

Records were made and broken, and not just of the vinyl variety. Sir Frances Chichester was the first winner of the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Yacht Race in Gipsy Moth III in 1960, while in 1964 Donald Campbell set up a new land and water speed record. This was a good decade for the England football team when, in 1966, they beat Germany 4-2 to win the World Cup. We didn't do so badly in the pop world either, with Tony Hatch's Downtown winning a Grammy Award for best Rock and Roll Song, and Sandie Shaw winning the Eurovision Song Contest with Puppet On A String.

If you'd like to take a nostalgic look back at The Swingin' Sixties, come and join The Haven Players on 4th or 5th July 2008 at the Stone Cross Memorial Hall. The fun starts at 7.30pm with a 1960s supper buffet, followed by musical entertainment with news headlines, a couple of sketches, and two groovy DJs. You may even spot a couple of your neighbours. Tickets are £10 and include the buffet supper. Book now by phoning 01323 460174
