Goodwood 25th August 2007

Goodwood 26th August, 2006

Brighton 9th July, 2006

Our visit to Glorious Goodwood on Saturday 25th August was our best event ever. As well as the 'Celebration Mile' there were six further exciting races, and nearly everybody in our party enjoyed some success at finding some winners.

The weather was exceptional; brilliantly sunny from the time we left Eastbourne until we set out on our return journey at about 6:00pm.

Those in our party who had not visited Goodwood for a while found the facilities excellent, with numerous eateries and bars. There were plenty of areas to sit and relax. . . . . listening to the Steel Band!!

Not, of course, forgetting the all-seater grandstand from where you have a view of the whole racecourse and the marvellous Sussex countryside.

We are planning another visit to this wonderful West Sussex racecourse for Goodwood's final day of racing in the 2007 season on Sunday 14th October.

If you would like to join us, contact Linus Gunning on 01323-470757, without delay.

On Sunday 8th July, travelling on a Lynn's Transport coach, the club members set off to the Brighton racecourse for the first event of the 2007 year, the 'Family Funday' sponsored by Butlins Holidays.

On arrival at the course, as last year, we had the use of a private room, where we were able to relax between races and enjoy the facilities, which included a private bar and Tote betting facilities.

The weather was glorious, the sun shone all day, and the high winds that had been with us throughout the previous week relented.

We were treated to a card of six exciting and very close races. Many of us were tempted to back 'Harbour Blues' in the first race, only to see it closely beaten into second place

However, a lucky few of the group more than recouped their losses by backing 'Blue Mistral', in the 4:30 race. This horse bravely held off the favourite to pass the post first at an incredible 50-1.

Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the day and we are now eagerly looking forward to going to Goodwood in August. If you want to join us, book now, or you could be disappointed.

Our thanks once again to Linus and Margaret for all their hard work in organising this great day out.

On Saturday, 26th August, again travelling by Flagship Coaches, about fifty members of the club, and their guests, set off to Goodwood racecourse.

Members picnicked in the car park before going into the course to watch some very exciting races. The handicapper did a great job and there were several very close finishes.

Although the weather was changeable, we were very lucky that the races all took place between the showers.

There was only one 'dodgy' result; Linus took first place in the sweepstake with three winners. However he was exonerated by the resulting steward's enquiry and allowed to keep the prize!

Another great day out, our thanks once more to Linus and Margaret for all their hard work.

Keep you eyes open for the next outing which, Linus assures us, will be a very popular event!

On Sunday 9th July, over forty SHRA members and their guests took the short trip to Brighton for the inaugural outing of the Sovereign Harbour Racing Club. The coach picked up passengers from both harbours before setting of on the one hour journey to the race course.

On arrival at the course, we were greeted by a member of staff and escorted to our private room, where we were able to relax between races and enjoy the facilities, which included our own bar. For those who didn't want to use the services of the on-course bookies, hostesses were available to place bets on the Tote.

We enjoyed a full card of races, and a few knowledgeable individuals came home with more money in their pockets than they left home with. Most of us, however, lost a few pounds, but it was worth is for the great entertainment and, fortunately, nobody came home without his shirt!

At the end of a great day out, we boarded the coach for the short journey home and arrived well in time to watch the final of the World Cup. What more can one ask for?

Our thanks to Linus and Margaret Gunning for all their hard work in arranging this superb event. It was heartening to hear people say that it made them feel part of a community, which was one of Linus's objectives in setting up the club.

Indeed, there were several members on the coach who had never been racing before. Many of them said that their main reason for going was to support the community, and the very enjoyable experience of the race meeting was an added bonus.

With your support the Sovereign Racing Club will become a regular feature of harbour life.
